Lowther were appointed by Conwy County Borough Council following a competitive tender to undertake the installation of 43 street trees and associated landscape improvements on Lloyd Street, Llandudno.
Overview
The project formed part of a programme of landscape and environmental improvements to Lloyd Street in Llandudno. Working within an active town centre environment, the project required both technical precision in substructure construction and careful management of disruption to residents and businesses throughout the programme.
Works Undertaken
Following removal of existing tarmac footpath layers, the substructure was excavated using an HGV-mounted vacuum excavator pump system operating within a managed traffic scheme. A Green Blue Urban tree pit strata cell system was then installed and backfilled with urban tree soil mix, providing the rooting volume and structural support required for street tree establishment in a hard-standing environment.
Securgrid was laid across the full prepared area and a compacted stone subbase installed. Resin bound tree grills and steel guards were then fitted prior to the tarmac surface being laid to finished levels, completing the groundworks phase of the programme.
The 43 extra heavy standard trees were installed in November 2022, following the establishment of the substructure in spring and summer. Installation involved removal of the guards and grilles, planting and securing the trees with underground guys, and the reinstatement of grilles and guards to finished condition.
Resident communication was a key element throughout, with the team working to keep neighbouring properties informed and disruption minimised during all phases of the programme.
