Diagnostic Methods
Sonic tomography uses sound waves to detect decay within trees, producing two- or three-dimensional images of internal structures. These images are interpreted by our qualified arboriculturists as part of an advanced tree risk assessment, allowing for a more detailed evaluation of associated risks. Alongside tomograph imaging, biomechanical assessments combine scanned data with the tree's physical structure to determine the most likely point of failure and which wind directions may pose the greatest risk, providing a comprehensive understanding of structural vulnerability.
The IML Resi PD (Resistograph) measures feed resistance along a needle inserted into a tree at a constant rate, allowing for the detection of small changes in wood structure. Data is digitally recorded and used to produce detailed graphs that illustrate the structural integrity of the tested wood. Where ground-level observation is insufficient, aerial inspections allow for closer examination of branch junctions and cavities, helping to confirm risk ratings for valuable trees in high-use areas.
All advanced assessments produce actionable reports with clear recommendations. Where remediation is required, our own arboricultural teams can carry out the recommended works on your behalf, providing a streamlined service from diagnostic assessment through to completion.

Our arboricultural capability covers the full scope of tree management. Routine tree surgery, stump removal and vegetation clearance are delivered by NPTC-certified surgeons from all five regional offices, supported by a specialist fleet of modern plant and equipment.
For clients requiring survey and assessment services, our dedicated arboricultural surveying team is based at our Penrith head office and travels nationally. Services include BS5837 surveys, impact assessments, arboricultural method statements, development watching briefs and Visual Tree Assessments. Where standard visual inspection is not sufficient, we offer advanced diagnostic assessments including Sonic Tomography, Biomechanical Assessment and IML Resi PD (Resistograph) testing, providing detailed internal data on trunk condition and structural integrity.
